Why batteries make more sense in Victoria in 2026 than before

Two things have shifted the maths. First, Victorian feed-in tariffs have collapsed. Since 1 July 2025 the Essential Services Commission no longer sets a mandated minimum feed-in tariff; retailers set their own and they can't go below zero. In practice, exported solar now earns most households only a few cents per kWh — sometimes effectively nothing in the middle of the day.

What actually drives the payback?

Your payback is driven by how much grid power the battery lets you avoid buying, not by the battery's size on paper. The bigger the gap between your peak grid rate and your feed-in tariff, and the more of the battery you cycle each day, the faster it pays for itself.

The main levers:

  • Your tariff. Time-of-use and demand tariffs reward a battery far more than a flat rate, because you avoid expensive peak-period power.
  • Your solar. Spare daytime solar is effectively free energy to store. No solar means charging from the grid, which changes the sums.
  • Your evening load. Households that cook, heat, cool and run appliances after sunset get more out of stored energy.
  • Right-sizing. An oversized battery that never fully cycles wastes money; an undersized one leaves savings on the table. This is the single biggest mistake we see.
