The short answer is almost always yes — and here's what's involved, what it costs you in compatibility terms, and what to check first.
Can you add a battery to an existing solar system?
Yes — in the large majority of cases you can retrofit a battery to an existing rooftop solar system, and the federal battery discount applies to batteries added to existing solar, not just brand-new installs. Your panels keep doing their job; the battery is added to store the daytime solar you're currently exporting for very little.
The main question isn't whether you can, but how — and that depends on your current inverter and switchboard. There are two common approaches, and the right one comes down to your existing gear.
AC-coupled vs hybrid inverter: which retrofit suits you?
For most existing-solar homes, an AC-coupled battery is the simplest retrofit because it adds a separate battery inverter and leaves your current solar inverter in place. A hybrid (DC-coupled) approach replaces your solar inverter with one that handles both panels and battery — neater and often more efficient, but a bigger job that usually only makes sense if your inverter is ageing or due for replacement anyway.

What should you check before retrofitting?
Before adding a battery, the key checks are your inverter's age and compatibility, your switchboard capacity, and whether you want blackout backup — because backup changes the wiring. Getting these right up front avoids surprises and rework.
What we look at on a site visit:
- Inverter age and type. A recent string inverter usually suits an AC-coupled battery; an old or failing one may be better replaced with a hybrid.
- Switchboard and meter. Some boards need an upgrade to safely add a battery and any backup circuits.
- Backup goals. Whole-home versus essential-circuits backup affects the design and must be decided before installation, not after.
- Available space. Batteries need a suitable, well-ventilated location that meets the AS/NZS 5139 installation standard.
- Your tariff and usage. These determine the right capacity, so you're not paying for storage you'll never cycle.
Will the federal discount apply to a retrofit?
Yes. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to eligible batteries added to new or existing solar systems, giving roughly 30% off the upfront installed cost via small-scale technology certificates. The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list and, if grid-connected, VPP-capable — both of which we handle as part of the install.
As with all incentives, the discount is stepping down over time, so the support is more generous now than it will be in future years. We confirm the current value before quoting so there are no surprises.
